Balin’s life has significantly improved since he joined the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and became a participant at Footsteps Community Services. Balin is an energetic and fun-loving 20-year-old with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD 3). He has faced numerous challenges over the past 20 years, which have affected his ability to participate in everyday activities that many people take for granted. Six years ago, Balin and his family relocated from Melbourne to Brisbane to access therapy and PBS services at Footsteps Community Services.
Balin has always wanted to live his life on his own terms and do things like any other young man his age. His parents wanted to empower him to live his best life and not be restricted by his disability. They tried various options to support Balin, but struggled to find service providers that could meet his needs.
After trying different options enabled by NDIS and having choice and control, Balin has now found several organisations that are helping him to be the person he wants to be. Balin’s dream of moving into his own home and live independently came true 12 months ago.
He was provided Supported Independent Living Funding, and thanks to the Get Going Support Team, his dream of living in his own home has become a reality. With a specialized support team by his side, Balin is now exploring employment opportunities that align with his needs and interests. He enjoys socializing at the pub, playing video games, and cooking. With the assistance of a collaborative support team, Balin can now live his life without the barriers that once hindered him.
